In a competition for a second straight day, the Mitchell High School girls golf team was "a bit rough around the edges," in the words of the team's coach.

The Kernels' varsity was fourth at the Parkston Invitational, shooting 374 as a team Friday. But considering the meet was Mitchell's home Lakeview Golf Course, the team left a few strokes on the table, coach Keri Munsen said.

"We were a little disappointed, with it being our home course. We didn't really shoot the types of rounds we felt we could have. That's just motivation for us to shoot better the next time we're out there because we know what we're capable of."

Aberdeen Central won the seven-team competition, carding a 326 and placing four golfers in the top-seven slots. Sioux Falls O'Gorman's Emily Olson shot 39s on both the front and back-nines of the course for a 78, winning the tournament by two strokes over Aberdeen's Sydney Wirebaugh.

Mitchell split into two teams for the meet Friday, with the Gold team consisting of mostly varsity players and the Black team made up of mostly junior varsity golfers. The Mitchell Gold team was paced by Masy Mock, who shot a 91 for 14th place and Ashley Zimmer shot a 93 for 18th place. Kailee Henglefelt was 20th, shooting a 93. For Mitchell Black, Mikayla Grissom shot a 93, good for 17th place in the meet.

"I have a variety of girls that are capable of being on the varsity and we go back and forth with a few of them. We average all of their scores and we split them up (Friday) that way and some of the JV kids shot really well."

Munsen noted the round of Ella Flippin, who shot 103 and well below her average, Munsen said.

"It's great for her," she said. "She can only get better."

For the host Trojans, they were sixth as a team with a 407 score. Jayden Bormann had a team-best round of 94, good for 21st. McCook Central/Montrose's Kayla Mentele shot 97, good for 23rd to lead the Fighting Cougars.

Mitchell's varsity team will be in action next at the Pierre Invitational Tuesday.
