Mitchell powerlifters show well at state meet

SIOUX FALLS -- Six of the seven participating members of the Mitchell Powerlifting Club placed at the South Dakota USA Powerlifting State Meet March 17 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

Competing for Mitchell was Keagen Schoenfelder, who placed second in the Raw Teen Men 59 kg (130-pound) class with a 551.1-pound total. He squatted 181.9, had a bench press of 121.2 and a deadlift of 248. Andrew Priebe took home two state titles in the 74-kilogram (163-pound) Open and 74-kg Masters 1 (ages 40-49) class with a 1,300.7 total, via a 490.5-pound squat, a 325.2-pound bench press and a deadlift of 485. Rickey Nelsen took home a state title and broke his own state record in the Raw Bench-Only 74-kg class, with a 314.1-pound press.

In the 93-kg (205-pound) Raw Open class, both Cody Jenks and Sean Bortnem competed in the deepest weight class in the meet. Jenks took home fourth place with a 1,273.1-pound total with a 429.9-pound squat, a 297.6-pound bench press and a 545.6-pound deadlift. Bortnem totaled 1,146.3 with a 429.9-pound squat, a 259-pound bench press and a 457.4-pound deadlift.

Abe Weins took home first place in the 105-kg (231-pound) Raw Open class with a 1,570.7-pound total via a 518-pound squat, a 385.8-pound bench press and a deadlift of 666.9-pounds. Ryan Antaya took home fourth in the 120-kg (264-pound) Raw Open class after totaling 1,361.3 pounds with a 507-pound squat, a 314.1-pound bench press and a 540.2-pound deadlift.

In all, four lifters hit National Meet Qualifying Totals for their efforts and have the option to compete at Nationals. Schoenfelder qualified in the 59 kg Raw Teen 1 (ages 14-15), Priebe in both 74 kg Open and Masters 1, Nelsen in the 74 kg Bench Only and Weins in the 105 kg Raw Open.

The meet was the largest in the state group's history, with 110 lifters.
