RAPID CITY-The Mitchell High School boys tennis team took second place at the Rapid City Invite on Saturday in Rapid City.

Mitchell finished with 97 total points in the two-day tournament, while Rapid City Stevens won the 10-team tournament with a total score of 108.

"That tournament had some pretty good teams in it and we were able to win some matches that we'd lost earlier this season," MHS head coach Pat Moller said. "Overall, it was a great experience. The team is excited about tennis and hopefully we can keep this going heading into the final portion of the season."

Leading the way for the Kernels was the No. 1 doubles duo of Jacob Dahme and Carter Cavanaugh, who won the title in doubles action on Friday. Dahme and Cavanaugh defeated Rapid City Stevens' Andy Guymon and Jackson Ellis 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match, while avenging a previous loss to St. Thomas More's top doubles team of Chase Thurness and Max Vetch in the first round.

"That was the talk of the tournament," Moller said about his No. 1 doubles team. "I don't think anyone expected us to do that. It just seemed like all the things we've been talking about all season long, they just got it. It was a fun experience and they are just starting to jell."

Mitchell's No. 2 doubles team of Adam Loes and Jared Suelflow placed fourth, while the No. 3 doubles team of Baley Miller and Alex Bergeson placed second.

In singles action, Cavanaugh took second in Flight 2, while Kade Clark placed second in Flight 6.

"Carter Cavanaugh really stepped up his game. He had a really strong performance in both singles and doubles," Moller said. "Kade Clark just keeps winning. He set himself up well for the postseason."

The Kernels will head into a busy week with Mitchell competing in a quad at 11:30 a.m. today, a triangular on Tuesday and a dual on Friday.
