Mitchell places 4th at Invitational

The Mitchell High School girls' golf team finished fourth at the Sioux Falls Invitational Monday at Willow Run Golf Course.

The Kernels finished with a 351 -- their best this season -- and Sioux Falls O'Gorman won the team title with a 295. Yankton was second with a 333 and Sioux Falls Lincoln finished third with a 345. Mitchell beat Watertown by one stroke for fourth. For more results, see Page B2.

"We talked about goals for scores on the way over and everyone was either at or below those goals," Mitchell assistant coach Mark Horan said. "It was a tough course with a lot of room from strokes but everybody played smart."

Kristin Sabers was Mitchell's top finisher in seventh with a 77 on the day. Sioux Falls O'Gorman's Jamie Benedict won the individual title with a 71, beating Yankton's Megan Mingo in a playoff.

Behind Sabers for Mitchell was Madison VanWalleghen in 19th with an 89 and Macy Miller was 24th with a 91. Kylie Barington finished in 32nd with a 94 and Trisha Flemmer was 55th with a 110.

The Kernels are back in action today at the Parkston Invitational, which begins at 10 a.m. at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.
