Carson Max led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk and scored the game-winning run on a passed ball as the Mitchell High School baseball team outlasted Huron 6-5 on Sunday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

The Kernels pulled out the win after Huron tied the game by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Spencer Neugebauer earned the win in relief of Devin Mehlhaff, who allowed one earned run off seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings pitched.

"We were able to stay in the game and Devin did a good job of battling for us," Mitchell head coach Luke Norden said. "Our offense was not where it needed to be and it was good to see Devin throw well for us."

Mitchell finished the game with only four hits, but were able to take advantage of 10 walks. Jordan Dirkes led Mitchell with two runs scored and an RBI, while Jed Schmidt, Sam Michels, Bryce Geraets, Drew Kitchens and Max each added an RBI in the win.

"We drew quite a few walks," Norden said. "We were patient at the plate and swung at good pitches, but we just didn't make contact like we should."

The Kernels improved to 12-4 with the win and ended a two-game losing streak. Mitchell and Huron were both scheduled to play Rapid City Central on Saturday and Sunday, but due to rain, Central didn't make the trip out. Mitchell and Huron decided to play each other after neither got to play Central.

"We just needed to get some at bats," Norden said. "It was important to see some live pitching and it's always nice to win but I would like to see us take our at bats more to heart."

Mitchell hosts region opponent Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
