ABERDEEN -- The Mitchell Legion baseball team swept its season-opening doubleheader against the Aberdeen Smitty's Tuesday.
Mitchell won the first game 7-0 and took the second game 11-5 in extra innings.
Right-handed pitcher Kirby Fuerst threw four innings and picked up the win for Post 18 in the first game. He allowed three hits, and Jared Schmidt pitched the final three innings in relief, also allowing three hits.
Offensively, Lakin Neugebauer was 2-for-4 with a double. Michael Sadler was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Seth Cavanaugh was 3-for-5 and Josh Schmidt was 2-for-3.
Mitchell was leading 5-1 headed into the sixth inning of the second game when a lightning strike stalled the game. Aberdeen had the bases loaded when the delay occurred and Josh Schmidt was on the mound for Post 18.

When the game resumed, Sadler had two wild pitches and gave up a base hit, allowing Aberdeen to get within 5-4. In the bottom of the seventh, Sadler gave up a run, tying it at 5.
The game stayed tied until the top of the ninth, when Post 18 exploded for six runs. Zach Bennett got the win on the hill for Mitchell, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.
Offensively, Sadler was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jared Schmidt was 2-for-6 with two doubles and five RBIs.
"We stung the ball pretty good," Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. "We had multiple extra-base hits and had some big two-out hits. We played well."
Mitchell (2-0) hosts Huron at 3 p.m. Monday in one nine-inning game at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
