HURON -- This round went to Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

The Mitchell High School finished second to the Knights at Thursday’s Huron Invitational at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

The Kernels shot a 325, while O’Gorman took the team title with a 320. The Kernels just edged the Knights, who have won the last three Class AA titles, by six strokes at the Hub City Invitational on April 29.

“The girls seemed pleased with the way they finished,” Mitchell assistant coach Jeff Meyerink said. “We kind of had a slow start for our four main players. We just couldn’t quite get the things rolling early, but the way they closed it out was some solid play again. We need to get them going a little sooner.”

Harrisburg’s Reese Jansa was the individual medalist with a 70. Masy Mock was Mitchell’s best finisher with a 74, including a 36 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine.

Quinn Dannenbring shot an 81, highlighted by a 39 on the back nine. Allison Meyerink shot a 43 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine for an 83. Ella Flippin (87), Maddie Childs (93) and Lara Widstrom (96) rounded out the Kernel golfers.

“We talked about getting off to a better start next time and seeing if we have to have more time to warm up or just mentally prepare for something,” coach Meyerink said. “I am just not quite sure, but they played well today and a 325 is a good, solid score. I know they are capable of more. They know they are, but we are just going to work that much harder to get them next time.”

The next time will be Friday for Mitchell and O’Gorman. The Kernels and Knights will play at the Yankton Invitational on Friday at Hillcrest Golf Club.

And coach Meyerink said the Kernels are itching to face the Knights again.

“I know the girls are going to go out to the course tonight and try to get a little more ready,” coach Meyerink said. “Tidy up some things that didn’t go very well today and try to get them tomorrow. It will be a fun test for them on a really great golf course.”

Team scores: 1. O’Gorman, 320; 2. Mitchell, 325; 3. Harrisburg, 339; 4. RC Stevens, 346; 5. Huron, 347; 6. Watertown, 365; 7. Pierre, 385; 8. Brookings, 388.
