Sioux Falls O’Gorman continued to have Mitchell’s number on Friday.

The Kernel girls golf team placed second at the Mitchell Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course. Mitchell carded a 328, while Class AA power O’Gorman (317) claimed the team title.

It’s the third straight tournament the Kernels have finished second to the Knights. But the Kernels still had four golfers finish in the top-15.

“It’s another good performance by the girls and one of the better finishes the program has had,” Mitchell coach Mark Horan said. “I would probably say the girls weren’t completely satisfied. They really had a goal to win our invite and left a few strokes out there on the course, but overall played pretty good.”

Horan added the second-place finish on their home course lit a fire under the team.

“They were at the range when the tournament got over already,” Horan said. “They are really trying to finish the season in a strong fashion.”

Harrisburg’s Reese Jansa shot a 4-under-par 68 to earn individual medalist honors. She finished with eight birdies on the day, including five on the front nine.

Mitchell’s Masy Mock tied for fourth place with a 5-over-par 77. She shot a 37 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine.

Ella Flippin was the next best Kernel golfer with an 82. She carded a 40 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine to tie for eighth place.

“She probably had one of her more solid performances,” Horan said. “The key going into the year was going to be that fourth score we thought and she has really met all expectations.”

Allison Meyerink (84) and Quinn Dannenbring (85) finished 10th and 13th, respectively. Maddie Childs (93), Lara Widstrom (94), Jayli Reints (101) and Emily Moody (122) rounded out the Kernel golfers.

Up next, Mitchell will play in the Sioux Falls Washington Invitational at Willow Run Golf Course on Monday. The Kernels opened their season at the golf course.

“It’s a difficult course with big, really fast greens,” Horan said. “It puts a premium on all parts of your game, but putting is really a big part of it and there’s a lot of penalty areas that you have to avoid, too. I would say course management and putting are two big things we are going to have to work on there.”
