Mitchell junior Legion swung a hot bat in the first game of a doubleheader against Brandon Valley on Wednesday at Drake Field. It resulted in a 9-1 win, but Mitchell fell 7-5 in the second game.

Mitchell racked up 14 hits, including four doubles, to help it jump out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning of the first game. It scored four runs in the second frame, with Jacob Schumacher, Jonah Schmidt and Kade Neugebauer all driving in runs.

Schmidt, Schumacher and Colby Gillen paced Mitchell at the plate with three hits apiece, but Gillen also added a pair of doubles. Neugebauer tacked on a pair of hits, too.

Jake Helleloid didn’t need a lot of run support on the mound as he went the distance. He struck out four and conceded an earned run on six hits.

Mitchell (16-15) travels to Yankton on Friday.
