Mitchell gymnastics wins Jill McCormick Invite

The Mitchell High School gymnastics team won the Jill McCormick Invitational with a total of 147.425 points on Saturday in Mitchell.

No only did the Kernels win their home meet, but they also put together a complete performance, Mitchell head coach Audra Rew said.

"I feel like this was our best performance on the season so far and the scores show that," Rew said. "The girls are really becoming consistent and confident from to start to finish."

Rapid City Stevens finished in second place with 140.725 points and Parkston finished in sixth place with 121.695 points.

Junior Quinci Herll won the all-around competition with 37.975 points, while Rapid City Stevens' Shay Trimble finished second with 37.325 points.

Herll placed first in both the bars and beam competitions with a 9.42 and 9.55, respectively.

"Quinci has been doing a great job all season, and she is becoming really confident as a junior on the team," Rew said. "She was really able to work out some of the little things that have been hampering her and she nailed all four events."

Mitchell senior Rebecca Sadler and Emily Prill rounded out the top-five in the all-around competition.

Sadler, who placed third in the floor competition, earned fourth place in all-around with 36.775 points, while Prill took home fifth with 35.750 points.

"I was excited that my seniors performed so well. It was the last time they will perform in Mitchell," Rew said. "To have such a great team day and have strong performances from Becca (Sadler) and Eli (Rew), it really topped the meet off on a special note."

While Mitchell showed its strongest performance, Rew said the team has plenty to build on as the season progresses.

"I think they realized that we can still keep getting better," Rew said. "We have a few little things we will work on Christmas break."

Mitchell competes in the Brookings Invite on Jan. 10 in Brookings.
