SPEARFISH-The Mitchell girls basketball team couldn't find a way to grind out a win against Spearfish on Saturday in Spearfish, falling 54-48.
"We got a lot better, but our free throw game is just killing us," Mitchell head coach Wes Morgan said. "We cut down on the turnovers, but we're still committing too many. The kids are improving a ton, especially with our shots, we just have to continue to get better."
Jenna Weich led the Kernels offensively, scoring 13 points while Mackenzie Miller had eight points and nine rebounds and Erin Farnham had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Mitchell left opportunities at the free throw line, as the Kernels were 9-of-21 against Spearfish. The Kernels shot 46 percent from the floor in the contest.
Madison Kaitfors led Spearfish with 17 points, while Rickie Engesser added 14 in the win.
