STURGIS - Mitchell Post 18’s bats were kept quiet during its 6-2 loss to Rapid City Post 22 on Friday in the Legion baseball Region 3A championship game. Despite the loss, Mitchell still qualified for the Class A state Legion baseball tournament in Pierre.

Jared Miller had Mitchell’s first hit of the game as he singled in a run in the second inning, but Post 18 still stranded the bases loaded. It led to Rapid City owning a 5-1 lead after two innings.

Rapid City hit Ryland DeVries hard, but he eventually settled down and ended up allowing six earned runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings. Jackson Sadler pitched two shutout innings in relief for Mitchell.

After a lengthy rain delay, Post 18 scored its final run as Drew Kitchens came home on a wild pitch.

Kitchens finished 1-for-2, while Miller and Jordan Dirkes accounted for Mitchell’s other two hits.

The Mitchell/Brandon Valley winner will take on either Rapid City Post 22 (50-10) or Brookings (10-20) on Thursday, with the loser’s bracket game at 10 a.m. and the winner’s bracket contest at 4:30 p.m.

The rest of the Class A state tournament field is mostly set. In the bottom half of the state bracket, Renner (32-14), which won the Region 1A tournament, will play Sioux Falls East (35-27) in the second game Wednesday. That wild card game will be decided today, as Watertown (26-26) travels to Yankton (16-24) at 2 p.m.
