DELL RAPIDS -- The Mitchell Christian girls basketball team erased a 15-point halftime deficit, but turnovers plagued the Golden Eagles down the stretch as they fell 52-42 to Dell Rapids St. Mary.

The Cardinals (1-1) opened the game pressing Mitchell Christian, which led to a stagnant offense, four second-quarter points and a 30-15 halftime deficit.

The Golden Eagles chipped away at the lead in the third quarter, though, thanks in part to Anna Cooper, who finished with 19 points on 10 of 14 shooting from the charity stripe and five rebounds.

“She came out and really led the way for us in the second half,” Mitchell Christian coach Chris Nemec said. “(She was) being aggressive, getting to the line and not settling for outside shot.”

The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to single-digits by the end of the third quarter, 39-30, as Nemec said his team played with more patience and poise. Mitchell Christian completed the comeback with a 10-1 run to tie the game 40-40 midway through the fourth.

“The girls really responded well coming out of halftime,” Nemec said. “It was just good to see them come out and fight for it in the second half.”

However, coming out of a timeout, the Cardinals’ Ella Heinitz hit a 3-pointer and turnovers began to hurt the Golden Eagles again, while late free throws clinched a double-digit win for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals also continued to control the glass, with Maddie Schwebach pulling down 11 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Heintz scored a team-high 18 points.

“We talked before the game about how important rebounding is against them because we knew they went to the glass hard,” Nemec said. “But (Schwebach) was able to get in there and get them second chances.”

Staci Wolbrink scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven boards for Mitchell Christian, while Erica Thompson added five points and six rebounds.

The Golden Eagles (1-1) host Kimball/White Lake at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
