Mitchell Christian School has been in rebuilding mode on the volleyball court in each of the past two seasons.

The Golden Eagles have just six wins in 49 games over the last two years, but they are hoping to have some improvement this fall.

Still, Mitchell Christian only has three returning letterwinners in a region with two teams in the top five of Class B in the South Dakota Media preseason polls, along with Hanson, which finished fifth at state last season.

"We've got a young team this year," Mitchell Christian head coach Cara Van Zee said. "We've got one senior and two juniors, but they've improved a lot and have been working hard."

The Golden Eagles only won six sets during the entire 2017 seasons, and one of the goals for the young team to become more proficient on offense as the underclassmen continue to learn.

Van Zee is going to focus on the fundamentals this year. She wants her players to build a foundation to work on through repetition.

"It always goes to basics," Van Zee said. "Continually having them run the same thing and having them get it in their head and putting it into practice and play. Getting them to get better with their eyesight and peripheral vision."

Sarah Morris is the lone senior on the squad and she is projected to be the libero for Mitchell Christian. Meanwhile, a pair of sophomores have stepped up according to Van Zee.

Erica Thompson and Maggie Grant have provided some leadership despite being underclassmen, which has been an added bonus. Junior Anna Cooper projects to provide a major role in the middle of the rotation.

"I've got two sophomores that have really stepped up and helped the younger girls," Van Zee said. "A lot of leadership that I've been pleasantly surprised by so far."

Mitchell Christian opens the season at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday at home against Howard.
