DELL RAPIDS -- The Mitchell Christian boys basketball team couldn’t slow down a quick Dell Rapids St. Mary squad on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles fell victim to the Cardinals’ pressure and dropped the season opener 61-44 in Dell Rapids.

Mitchell Christian (0-1) trailed just by two points in the first quarter, but Dell Rapids St. Mary began to wear down the Golden Eagles with its full-court press and led 31-20 at halftime.

“We did a pretty good in the first half,” Mitchell Christian coach Jesse Tolsma said. “They hit a tough shot to end the half to go up 11. But then the second half we kind of set into their pressure a little bit and started really struggling with our guards kind of fading out and going away from the ball, which led to a couple of turnovers in transition and easy buckets for them.”

The Cardinals (2-0) stretched their lead to 47-31 after the third quarter as they continued to pile on the points.

“I thought the kids a good job of competing throughout the game,” Tolsma said. “We did a lot of good things on the defensive end, but we just have to continue to improve taking care of the ball and limiting those fastbreak points for the opponents.”

Dell Rapids St. Mary’s dynamic scoring guard Connor Libis dropped in 15 points, but he also received help on the night as Max Herber (11) and Weston Geraets (10) both scored in double figures.

“They really have a good solid team and so we gave up a few easy baskets,” Tolsma said. “We let them get out in transition a little bit, which allowed some of those nice role players to find those easy ones and get some confidence going.”

Ty Vander Pol scored 11 points and Luke Knutson added 10 points for the Golden Eagles. Alec Nelson tossed in nine points.

Mitchell Christian hosts Kimball/White Lake at 8 p.m. on Thursday at the MCS gym.

“They have a solid team,” Tolsma said. “They have some quick guards and they have some nice size. So it will kind of come down to that same thing, playing with poise and taking care of the ball.”
