PIERRE-Mitchell and Chamberlain high school each sent five wrestlers to the state tournament after placing in the top-four in their respective weight classes at the Region 3A meet in Pierre.

"I feel like we could have gotten a little more," Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. "We had a few kids that had it within their grasp, but they're young and will have an opportunity next year. But the important thing now is for kids to realize once they're at state, you have an opportunity. I want all five of them going in the mindset of placing."

Briggs Havlik (145-pound weight class) took third for Mitchell after defeating Pierre's Maguire Raske 6-5 in the third-place match.

"He had a good day, it was too bad because he just barely lost a close match in the semifinal," Carpenter said. "But he had to scramble in the last match, which is something you want to see in that match. I'm looking forward to what he can do at the state meet."

Meanwhile, Carson Max also took third for the Kernels at 170.

"Similar to Briggs, he lost a close match in the semifinal," Carpenter said. "I think Carson and Briggs have to be our best chances to get places in the state meet."

Nick Claussen (220) and Nash Hutmacher (285) each won their respective weight classes for Chamberlain. Claussen won a 3-1 decision over Pierre's Quinn Reimers in the championship match, while Hutmacher won a 2-1 decision over Aberdeen Central's Trajan LaRocque.

Collin Powell (106), Max Donovan (113) and Spencer Kirkpatrick (138) all finished third for the Cubs. Chamberlain placed fifth at the meet with a score of 78.
