HURON — The Mitchell High School boys golf team is in fifth place after day one at the South Dakota Class AA state golf championships at Broadland Creek Golf Course.
Mitchell's 322 strokes put the Kernels 20 strokes back of the leader, Sioux Falls Lincoln, eight strokes behind fourth-place Watertown and one stroke up on sixth-place Yankton.
Macon Larson, who finished 12th individually to lead the Kernels a year ago, shot a team-best 7-over-par 79 on Monday, which puts him in a tie for 18th with Lincoln's Adam Knigge. Jackson Childs (80), Lincoln Bates (81) and Noah Larson (82) were the other three scores that factored in to Mitchell's team total. Asher Dannenbring (83) and Ashton Reimnitz (98) rounded out the remaining results for the Kernels.
Watertown's Jake Olson shot a 2-under-par 70 on day one and leads joint-second-place finishers Luke Honner and Charles Mickelson, both of Lincoln, by four strokes entering Tuesday. Lincoln's Bennett Geraets, Brandon Valley's Logan Kelling, Sioux Falls O'Gorman's Jacob Stewart, Harrisburg's Will Parsons and Sioux Falls Jefferson's Andy Noble all shot 75 to tie for fourth and round out the top eight individual competitors.
