In a volleyball season that had few highlights for the Mitchell Kernels, freshman Mackenzie Miller achieved quite the feat this week.

Miller was the only freshman honored by the coaches of the Eastern South Dakota conference, picked as an honorable mention selection for the league. The other 21 players honored this week were sophomores or older.

Miller led the Kernels in multiple key categories, including 41 aces, 159 kills, 251 digs and tied for the team-high in serve-receive percentage with 59 percent (an honor shared with fellow freshman Bridget Thill).

"I think it's a pretty great honor for somebody that led our team and for a player whose team finished last in the conference to still be recognized by the coaches in the conference," said Mitchell coach Deb Thill. "When you're last in the conference, you're not going to get much recognition but Mackenzie deserved it."

Thill reiterated that the conference was as good as it's been in a long time. Five ESD teams (Harrisburg, Huron, Pierre, Brandon Valley and Aberdeen Central) all made the state tournament and three teams from District 3AA (Huron, Pierre and Aberdeen Central) qualified.
