Miller leaving UNLV, reportedly in hunt for SDSU job

Mitchell native and University of Nevada-Las Vegas associate men's basketball coach Ryan Miller won't be returning to his job with the Runnin' Rebels after two seasons, Miller said Tuesday.

Mitchell native and University of Nevada-Las Vegas associate men's basketball coach Ryan Miller won't be returning to his job with the Runnin' Rebels after two seasons, Miller said Tuesday.

Miller could be trading the job in for one closer to home, after it was reported Tuesday that Miller is a serious candidate for the open head coaching job at South Dakota State.

"After weeks of talking with (head) coach Chris Beard and the administration, we have come to the conclusion that we should mutually part ways," Miller wrote in a statement on Twitter. "It was a dream come true to work and be apart of a prestigious basketball program ... The program is in great hands with coach Chris Beard and I wish the program nothing but success."

ESPN college basketball reporter Jeff Goodman reported Tuesday that Miller, 40, is one of four candidates for the open SDSU job. Other candidates, according to Goodman, include Augustana University coach Tom Billeter, Iowa State assistant T.J. Otzelberger and Texas Tech assistant and former Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Vince Taylor. No timetable is in place for the school to hire a new coach.

The Jackrabbit job has been open for a week, since longtime coach Scott Nagy left for Wright State on April 4.

Miller has never been a collegiate head coach but has built a strong resume since graduating from Mitchell High School in 1994. He played collegiately at Northern State and was a standout for the Wolves. He worked under John Calipari at Memphis in basketball operations, was an assistant for one year at Pepperdine College, spent five years at New Mexico as an assistant for Steve Alford, was associate head coach for two seasons at Auburn before leaving for the UNLV job.

Miller has been well-regarded as a recruiter, both in the United States and abroad. UNLV was coached by Dave Rice until he was fired in January. Todd Simon was the interim coach for the Runnin' Rebels through the end of the year before he became the head coach at Southern Utah. Beard was hired from Arkansas-Little Rock after helping the school to the NCAA tournament and a first-round upset of Purdue.
