MHS wrestling places 19th at Rapid City Invite

RAPID CITY -- The Mitchell High School wrestling team barely stayed in the top 20 at the Rapid City Invitational on Saturday.

The Kernels scored 62 team points to tie with Berthoud (Colo.) for 19th overall. Chamberlain finished in 10th place with 105 points, while Bismarck (N.D.) scored 188 to edge Windsor (Colo.) (175.5) for the team title.

Mitchell was paced by a pair of wrestlers placing in the top eight. Kyler Bauder (138) took down Pierre’s Tyson Johnson, 4-3, in the fifth-place match. Joe VanOverschelde (170) took seventh with a 5-1 decision over Huron’s Tyson Lien.

Chamberlain’s successful final day was highlighted by Nash Hutmacher. He took first at 285 pounds, punctuating the title with a pin over Thunder Basin (Wyo.)’s Dalton McInerney in 17 seconds. Hutmacher pinned all five of his opponents in under 2 minutes.

Gabe Skustad (132) and Jasiah Thompson (182) both pinned their opponents, too.

It took 3:02 for Skustad to pin Spearfish’s Oakley Blakeman in the third-place match at 132 pounds, while Thompson pinned Rapid City Stevens’ True Synhorst in 3:58 to place in seventh at 182 pounds. Ruger Forester was pinned, but still took eighth at 220 pounds.

Mitchell hosts Huron at 7 p.m. Thursday.
