BRANDON -- The Mitchell High School high school volleyball team couldn’t stop a flurry of points on Tuesday.

The Kernels fell to No. 5 Brandon Valley in straight sets in an Eastern South Dakota Conference match. The set scores were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-14.

MHS coach Deb Thill said the Kernels were right there with the Lynx in all three sets, but couldn’t keep pace down the stretch.

“It was pretty close until about point 12 and then all three sets they had a server go back and we just couldn’t seem to make a stop on her,” Thill said. “She was really good. It kind of got away from us there a little bit.”

It was the second time the Kernels (1-5) have been swept by Brandon Valley (6-2) this season, but Thill saw some improvements from the first meeting.

“We actually serve-received really well, which is obviously one of the things we have been working on and serving,” Thill said. “... Our defense was good. We won all the long rallies, hustling was really good. We just have to keep getting better. We are playing teams with better experience.”

Complete statistics from the match were not available when this edition went to press.

The Kernels will host No. 1 Sioux Falls O’Gorman at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at MHS gym.
