The start of the season has been kind to the Mitchell High School tennis team.
The Kernels swept St. Thomas More 9-0 on Friday in the team's home opener at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.
"It was a good day. We had tough conditions out there," Mitchell head coach Pat Moller said. "We had a really good match from St. Thomas More, they're improved from last year. The match was closer than the score made it look."
Eight of the nine matches were decided in straight sets, except at No. 4 singles. Mitchell's Carter Cavanaugh defeated Max Vetch in a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. No. 5 singles player Jared Suelflow stook out, blanking Ben Freeman 6-0, 6-0.
"Jared has come such a long way," Moller said. "He's been an unexpected surprise and was a leader in doubles for us again today, too. I told him to make one minor adjustment, and he just dominated. If he continues to improve and play the way he's been playing, he's going to have a great season."
