BRANDON - Mitchell earned two tough Eastern South Dakota Conference road dual victories Friday, topping Brandon Valley and Watertown.

Mitchell took down the host Lynx 39-21, before grinding past the Arrows 36-31 in their second dual. The two wins cap a strong ESD dual campaign for Mitchell (10-5 overall), which finished at 7-1 in conference showdowns.

With the Kernels down 31-30 going to the final bout, Beau Foote was the difference for Mitchell in the win over Watertown, pinning Mac Friedel in 3 minutes, 31 seconds for the winning team points at 285 pounds.

Mitchell scored three straight wins in the middleweights, starting from Cole Gehrke's pin at 145 pounds in the second period, Tucker Vilhauer's 11-9 win over Jake Werner at 152, and Joe VanOverschelde's win at 160 pounds by a 3-2 decision, building a 24-15 lead. From there, the Arrows vaulted back in front with a major decision and two pins for a 31-24 lead after 12 weights. A forfeit for Mitchell's Carter Max at 220 pounds set up Foote for the chance to win it.

Other winners for Mitchell included Brock Sparks (106) and Brandon Sparks (113), with the latter landing a second-period pin. Ryan McGinnis had a 7-1 winning decision at 132 pounds for the Kernels, as well.

Against the Lynx, Mitchell built the lead through early matches. Brandon Sparks had a forfeit at 113 pounds, followed by Bryce Palmer (120) and Trent Beintema (126) each landing pins for an 18-3 Kernel lead. Brandon Valley won five of the next seven matches for a 21-18 lead, but Mitchell closed with pins from Blake Fredericks (195), Max at 220, and a 5-3 decision by Foote at 285 pounds. VanOverschelde (170) had a 9-4 win, and Logan Sparks (138) won 3-2 over Teygan Harstad.

The triangular was scheduled to take place Thursday, before poor weather forced a postponement and the event was moved to Brandon Valley on Friday.

Mitchell next hits the mat in the Region 3A meet on Feb. 16 in Huron.
