The Mitchell High School boys golf team finished middle of the pack at its home meet on Friday.

The Kernels carded a 331 during the Mitchell Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course, finishing in seventh place at the 15-team invite. Sioux Falls O’Gorman (303) won the team title, edging Sioux Falls Roosevelt (304), Harrisburg (304) and Yankton (305).

“The last three tournaments we have had two sevenths and an eighth,” Mitchell coach Mark Horan said. “So I guess we play to our average. We were probably hoping to shoot a little better. It was a windy cold day. We hung around and hung around, but really couldn’t get anything going too much.”

But the Kernels took advantage of it being a home invite and continued to sharpen their skills afterward.

“What a great group of guys this year, for example the tournament is over and five of them go out to the driving range to practice,” Horan said. “Coach can’t ask for much more than that.”

Roosevelt’s Jack Eggebraaten shot a two-under-par 70 and took home the individual medalist honors. Lincoln’s Luke Honner and Spearfish’s Sam Grout tied for second with 71s.

Mitchell’s Macon Larson tied for 25th with an 80. The junior carded 40s on both the front and back nines.

“He even had a few loose shots,” Horan said. “But he’s level headed and keeps his composure and kept battling all day and kept it down there pretty low.”

Freshman Noah Larson was right behind him, shooting an 82 and tying for 29th place. He shot a 42 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine.

“He’s been working on his game real hard this week and his performance showed,” Horan said.

Lincoln Bates (T-33, 83), Ashton Reminitz (T-44, 86) and Carter Harris (T-44, 86) were the next Kernel finishers.

Horan also highlighted Harris’ round, which featured a 42 on the front nine.

“I think we have a big future,” Horan said. “We have a lot of young kids and he’s definitely one of them.”
