YANKTON-The Mitchell High School girls golf team placed second at the Yankton Triangular on Tuesday.

The Kernels shot a 373 at Yankton's Fox Run Golf Course. Yankton won the team title with a 349 and Sioux Falls Lincoln shot a 386.

It was Mitchell's second meet of the season and coach Keri Munsen could notice the team feeling more comfortable than the first outing.

"We shot a lot better as a team," Munsen said. "If we can stay in the 80s and low 90s, that's exactly where I need them to be and that's where we want to be as far as competing with the other teams in the state. They pretty much did that today so I was proud of them."

Yankton's Morgan Strahl shot an 83 and was the individual medalist. Mitchell's Masy Mock carded an 88 and finished third. Mock shot a 47 on the front nine, but tied with Strahl for a back-nine low of 41.

"The front nine she struggled for a while with her putting," Munsen said about Mock. "She had I think it was three five putts in a row. So I kind of talked to her in between the nines. I told her 'We have a lot to work on this meet, but just try and relax and get some control with it.' It looks like she did that and it all came out good for her."

Mitchell's Ashley Zimmer (92) placed seventh. Makayla Grissom (96) and Kailee Henglefelt (97) placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Other Mitchell golfers and scores included: Delilah Brinker (98), Ella Flippin (100), Shannen Koch (105) and Emma Bradley (137).

The Kernels will compete in the Huron Invitational on Thursday. They will then play in the Yankton Invitational on Friday.

"We are really looking forward to it and playing in the tournaments and getting some experience," Munsen said about the upcoming schedule.
