BROOKINGS-The Mitchell High School boys golf team had a good day at the Brookings Invitational on Monday.
And so did everybody else at the Brookings Country Club.
The Kernels shot a 330 and placed 10th in the 18-team tournament, which consisted of Eastern South Dakota Conference foes and other Class AA teams around the state.
Each of the Kernels shot under 90, with Ethan Huber recording a six-over-par 78 to finish tied for 16th place in the stacked field.
"It's very competitive in AA golf," MHS coach Mark Horan said. "Ethan shot a 78-six over par-and didn't even get a medal. So it's very competitive out there."
Sioux Falls Roosevelt carded a 288 and won the team title by 16 shots over second-place Rapid City Stevens. Sioux Falls Roosevelt's Jack Lundin (68) was the individual medalist.
Huber shot a 38 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine. Mitchell's Max Dailey shot an 80 and tied for 26th place.
"Our senior leader-Ethan Huber-had another real solid day," Horan said. "He played good. Max Dailey turned in a good round. He had been struggling a little bit lately and had a real good round and everybody shot under 90. In fact, all day long the guys were hitting the ball well. They just didn't putt very well. The greens were fast and hard to read, hard to figure out. But if we get that down, I think we can play well on that course."
Max Tupper (85) placed 56th. Jakob Studer, Kade Clark and Nick Bennett all shot 87s and tied for 63rd place.
The Kernels have four meets left before the state tournament on Oct. 1-2 at the Brookings Country Club. Horan said Mitchell has yet to play up to its potential this season.
"I am still waiting for us to really cut loose," Horan said. "We believe they have got a little more in them than what we've shown so far."
The Kernels host the Mitchell Invitational on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Lakeview Golf Course. Horan said every Class AA team, but one will be at the meet.
"We will see how we measure up there," he said.
