MCS’ defense guides it past Iroquois

Mitchell Christian opened its season with a win.

IROQUOIS -- The Mitchell Christian boys basketball team relied on its defense in a dominating 49-6 win over Iroquois/Doland on Friday.

The Golden Eagles scored 21 points in the first quarter, and held Iroquois/Doland scoreless in the second quarter. Mitchell Christian capped the win with a 19-point third quarter.

“Defensively, they really did a good job communicating,” MCS coach Jesse Tolsma said. “We really talked about making them uncomfortable, making someone else not used to scoring making those decisions.”

Max Reynen scored a team-high 15 points, as he made 6 of 9 shots. He also sank a 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles.

“He’s done a really good job this offseason working hard. He was really a steady hand for us,” Tolsma said about Reynen. “Defensively, some easy turnovers got him in a rhythm early.”

Aiden Leber added 11 points and Micah Frey chipped in 10 points in the win. Nathanael Anderberg dished out seven assists, while Frey pulled down a team-high five rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 52.9 percent from the field and nailed 6 of 12 3-pointers.

Mitchell Christian (1-0) travels to Dell Rapids St. Mary on Tuesday.

“Getting a win tonight is something nice to say, ‘Hey, our hard work is paying off. We’re moving in the right direction,’ ” Tolsma said.
