MCS boys suffer first loss of season to DRSM

Mitchell Christian to Dell Rapids St. Mary on Tuesday.

DELL RAPIDS -- The Mitchell Christian boys basketball team couldn’t contain Class B No. 5 Dell Rapids St. Mary on Tuesday in a 67-26 loss.

“It’s always a fun game playing against a top-five team in the state,” Mitchell Christian coach Jesse Tolsma said. “We came out and we struggled right away. We were a little shell-shocked, a little intimidated. But I think after we settled in, in the second quarter we competed pretty well there.”

DRSM’s (1-0) size impacted the Golden Eagles early, shutting them out in the first quarter. The Cardinals led 28-0 after the first quarter, but Mitchell Christian responded with a more competitive second frame. DRSM held a 45-14 lead at halftime.

“They’re a tough, physical team,” Tolsma said. “They’re not afraid to apply some pressure. They got their rotations down really well. That first quarter bothered us a little bit. We didn’t quite get to our spots where we wanted to execute our offense from.”

Sam Palmer scored a team-high 16 points for DRSM, while Connor Libis added 14 points. Max Herber also had 12 points. For Mitchell Christian, Nathanael Anderberg had a team-high seven points. Max Reynen pulled down seven rebounds.

“The big thing for us is to put this one behind us and learn from it and come out ready to compete again,” Tolsma said. “We’re a young team, so we’re still gaining experience. Tonight we learned a lot.”
