Marlins hosting state PeeWee B tournament for second-straight year

Each team will play three games, with 12 total games planned between Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The age group includes hockey players ages 11 and 12.

MITCHELL — Eight Peewee-level hockey teams will converge on the Mitchell Activities Center starting on Friday as the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association will hold the state Peewee B championships.

The schedule kicks off at 1 p.m. Friday with third-seeded Sioux Falls 2 taking on No. 6 Rushmore, followed by No. 2 Sioux Falls 1 battling No. 7-seed Aberdeen at 3 p.m. The fourth-seeded Mitchell Marlins will play at 5 p.m. against No. 5 Brandon Valley, followed by top-seeded Oahe and No. 8 Yankton at 7 p.m.

Each team will play three games, with 12 total games planned between Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The age group includes hockey players ages 11 and 12.

Sioux Falls 1 and Oahe each had the top records in the regular-season, each finishing 11-3, with an overtime loss and with 23 points earned. Sioux Falls 2 was third in the points with 22 points in an 11-3 season, followed by Mitchell at 10-4. Oahe is the defending champions in the division, after outsourcing its opponents 28-3 over three games in Mitchell.

The Marlins swept the season series with Brandon Valley (6-7), winning 4-2 and 4-3. Mitchell started the season with a 4-1 record and were later 7-2 before closing the season with three consecutive victories.

The semifinal round will take place on Saturday, with games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Placement games will take place at 8 a.m. (seventh place), 10 a.m. (fifth place), 12:30 p.m. (third place), along with the title game at 3 p.m. Sunday.

A pair of other Mitchell teams are also in action at state tournaments this week.

Mitchell’s under-14 girls team will be in action at the state tournament in Watertown. The Marlins (2-12) will take on Oahe (11-3) at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinal round, with Capitals seeded No. 2 and Mitchell at No. 7.

The winner will take on third-seeded Sioux Falls or No. 6 seed Sioux Center, Iowa at 3 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. The other half of the bracket includes top-seeded Rapid City against Watertown and fourth-seeded Brookings against Aberdeen. The championship game is at 3 p.m. Sunday.

At the Peewee C state tournament, Mitchell will take on Huron at 6 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Marlins were 0-12 during the season and will take on Huron, which is the No. 3 seed and was 9-2-1 during the season. With a win, Mitchell would advance to a semifinal at noon Saturday against either Sioux Falls or Watertown.
