MAC takes fourth at state swim meet, sets seven records

RAPID CITY--The Mitchell Aquatic Club finished in fourth place and set seven records at the South Dakota state outdoor swim meet on Sunday in Rapid City.

RAPID CITY-The Mitchell Aquatic Club finished in fourth place and set seven records at the South Dakota state outdoor swim meet on Sunday in Rapid City.

MAC's fourth place finish is the highest place the team has had in the past six years and MAC also earned the team spirit award, given to the team with the best sportsmanship and team unity. It was the third state meet in a row MAC has won the team spirit award.

MAC also set two state records and five state meet records. Mitchell broke the state record in the 15-18 girls 200-meter medley relay. The team consisted of Lucie Anderson, Addison Bertram, Tevyn Waddell and Karlie Tiede and the same team won the 400 medley relay at the meet. Waddell broke the state record in the 100 freestyle and set state meet records in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She took first place in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 individual medley for a total of seven individual wins at the state meet.

Christian Fossum set a meet record in the 17-19 boys 200 butterfly and broke MAC team records in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly. Fossum won five events at the state meet and both Waddell and Fossum won their respective age groups.

In the 13-14 boys division, Caleb Swanson won the 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle, 1500 freestyle and 200 butterfly, while setting the MAC team record in the 1500. Swanson took second place in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly and third in the 200 freestyle to finish second in his age group overall.


Anderson won the 15-16 girls 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, while in 8 and under girls, Sophie Huber won the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke and Jordan Herrlein won the 50 breaststroke in 8 and under boys. Huber took second in her division and Herrlein took third in his age group.

The 15-19 boys 400 medley relay team consisting of Ethan Huber, Gage Nelson, Christian Fossum and Gray Determan placed first and the 8 and under relay team of Silas Holdeman, Kambyl Wede, Huber and Herrlein placed second in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

Riley Kaul placed fifth overall in the 11-12 boys division, taking second in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Andrew Herrlein placed third in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke in the 13-14 boys division.

Nelson placed second the 200 backstroke and third in 100 breaststroke in 16-18 boys, Cailey Scott placed second in the 1500 freestyle, third in the 200 backstroke and 800 freestyle in 15-16 girls and Taylor Studer placed third in the 200 backstroke in 13-14 girls. Karlie Tiede took second in the 50 freestyle in 17-19 girls.

MAC also had three swimmers qualify for the 14 & under Mega Zone meet which begins on Thursday in Indianapolis, Indiana. Swanson, Andrew Herrlein, and Kaul all qualified based on their performances at the state meet.
