ABERDEEN-The Mitchell Aquatic Club fought to a sixth-place finish as a team at the South Dakota state championship meet this past weekend in Aberdeen.
Mitchell also boasted four swimmers that won state championships over the weekend.
Tevyn Waddell won seven events and set five state meet records in the process. Waddell won the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 100 fly and the 100 freestyle, setting state meet records in each. She also won the 200 individual medley and the 200 fly. Waddell took first place overall in the 17-19 girls age group.
Meanwhile, Christian Fossum won three events in the 17-19 boys age group, winning the 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, and 200 fly, setting a new MAC team record in the 200 fly. Fossum also placed second in the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley and took second overall in his age group.
Cailey Scott also won three events, taking the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle events in the 15-16 girls age group and third in the 200 backstroke and 200 fly. Scott also placed second overall in the 15-16 girls age group. Lucie Anderson won the 100 and 200 backstroke in the 15-16 girls age group and placed fourth overall.

MAC had four swimmers finish as a runner-up. Caleb Swanson, 13, placed second six times in the 500, 1000, 1650 freestyles, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley, and 200 fly, while also finishing fourth place in the 13-14 boys age group. Swanson also set three MAC team records in the 1650 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, and 400 individual medley for the 13-14 boys age group. Gage Nelson finished second in the 1000 freestyle, 1650 freestyle and took third in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke in the 15-16 age group, setting team records in the 1650 freestyle and 200 breaststroke. Taylor Studer, 13, placed second in the 200 back and Jordan Herrlein, 7, placed second in the 8 and under 25 backstroke.
Rounding out the top-3 finishers were Ethan Huber, 15, 1000 freestyle, 1650 freestyle; Andrew Herrlein, 14, 100 backstroke; Addison Bertram, 14, 100 breaststroke; and Sophia Huber, 8, 50 breaststroke.
The 15-19 boys 400 medley relay placed second, that team consisted of Jakob Studer, Gage Nelson, Christian Fossum, and Ethan Huber. The 15-19 girls 200 and 400 Medley relays placed 3rd with Jilian Ebert, Lucie Anderson, Cailey Scott, and Tevyn Waddell. While the 8 and under 100 Medley Relay took 3rd with Kambyl Wede, Sophia Huber, Jordan Herrlein, and Jacob Ebert.
MAC finishes our winter season this coming weekend competing at the Central Zone Speedo Sectional meet in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. This meet will have swimmers for North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. MAC has nine swimmers competing in the regional competition, Tevyn Waddell, Christian Fossum, Cailey Scott, Lucie Anderson, Gage Nelson, Ethan Huber, Jakob Studer, Taylor Studer, and Addison Bertram all qualified to compete.
