MITCHELL – Trailing 4-3 after eight innings of play, Lennox Only One managed to score four runs in the top of the ninth to advance past Wynot (Neb.) with a 7-4 victory in the first round of the 2022 Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Friday afternoon at Cadwell Park.

Lennox committed two more errors than Wynot in the contest and was also out-hit 11-8, but every time Lennox needed to respond, it did. Wynot was the first on the scoreboard as it recorded two runs in the fourth inning with a double from Devin Lammers and a base hit from James Kaiser. The very next inning, the first batter for Lennox, Cam Wulf, answered back with a home run to left field on the third pitch he saw at the plate.

After Ray Williams was walked at the plate, Drew Sweeter also recorded a big hit to left field, which in turn ended up being a two-run home run, that gave Lennox its first lead of the game.

Wynot managed to regain the lead in the seventh after a triple by Lee Heimes and a double by Scott Morrison. In Lennox’s last attempt to save its season, it did what needed to be done in the ninth inning. Back-to-back doubles from Wulf and Williams tied the game at four and a pop up fly by Sweeter helped bring home Williams and give Lennox a 5-4 lead.

Corey Vasquez hit the third home run for Lennox later that inning, scoring two more runs and extending the lead to three. On the mound, Sweeter pitched three straight strikeouts on 11 pitches, ending Wynot’s season and helping Lennox advance.

For Wynot, Lammers went 3-for-5 at the plate while Heimes, Kaiser and Jaelen Wieseler all notched two hits apiece. Morrison and Peyton Wieseler chipped in with one hit each. Jackson Sudbeck pitched 4 ⅔ innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits, while Jaelen Wieseler pitched 4 ⅓ innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits while striking out two.

Lennox advances to play Canova in the round of 16, which takes place Monday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m.
