Legion baseball roundup: McCook/Miner holds on for victory

CANOVA -- Cole Gassman and Jesse Muth each had two-hit, two-RBI games for McCook/Miner to win a Legion baseball game Sunday over Garretson 8-6 in Canova.

Kendall Gassman had two hits, as Canova built an early 6-1 lead and hung on for the win in seven innings.

Ross Roling picked up the win, throwing four innings, allowing two earned runs, three hits and striking out four. McCook/Miner had 11 hits and won despite six errors.

McCook/Miner (10-9) will play at Alexandria on Thursday.

Wagner/Avon 15, Gregory 2

GREGORY - Scoring in each of the first five innings, Wagner/Avon's Legion baseball team traveled to Gregory and picked up a 15-2 win in five innings on Saturday.

Drue Soukup was 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs. Ben Soukup had three hits and scored three runs for Wagner/Avon (5-4), which had 19 hits. Andrew Soukup, Derek Soukup and Alex Sully each had two-RBI games.

Hunter Hewitt and Ben Soukup combined for the five inning game on the mound. They allowed four hits and two earned runs combined in the game.

J.J. Beck had a double for Gregory and Blake Boes had a hit and a stolen base in the loss. Triv Vosika pitched four innings in the loss.

Alexandria 8, Wagner/Avon 5

WAGNER - Levi Doyle's three-RBI effort helped Alexandria get past Wagner/Avon on Friday 8-5 in Wagner in a Legion baseball game.

Cade Schmitt and Wyatt Kayser each had two hits and Aaron Wenande drove in two runs and stole two bases. The game was tied 5-5 heading to the ninth before the Angels tacked on three runs.

Kayser got the win, pitching 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and no runs, while striking out three. Josh Feiner threw 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven batters, while allowing 10 hits, five runs (one earned).

Drue Soukup, Alex Sully, Ben Soukup and Zach Wynia all had two-hit games for Wagner/Avon. Sully scored two runs in the loss. Drue Soukup took the loss in relief, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs, while striking out 10.

Alexandria (6-4) takes on Lennox at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Alexandria.
