Mitchell’s Macon Larson and Jackson Childs earned top-15 finishes at the Eastern South Dakota Conference golf meet Saturday.
The two Kernel golfers spearheaded a fourth-place finish for MHS at Lakeview Golf Course. The Kernels shot a 332, while Yankton won the team title with a 305.
MHS coach Mark Horan can’t remember the Kernels ever doing much better at an ESD meet.
“One year we got second,” Horan said. “It was a good showing for the team and everybody is starting to get their roll on for state.”
Larson shot a four-over-par 76 and took fifth place. He was just two shots off Yankton’s Henry Homstad, who was the individual medalist with a 74.

He shot a 39 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine. He carded 12 pars and one birdie on the day.
“Macon is two shots from winning the whole thing,” MHS coach Mark Horan said. “That’s kind of the way golf is, but a chip here or a better putt and he would have been right in there for the top prize. He played really well.”
Childs shot a four-over-par 81 and tied for 15th place. He shot a 41 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine. His round featured nine pars and one birdie.
“Jackson started out really great,” Horan said. “He had a little bump in the road, but he got the train back on the tracks.”
Lincoln Bates (T-27, 87), Noah Larson (T-29, 88) and Ashton Reminitz (T-29, 88) were the next three Kernel finishers. Carter Harris shot a 97 and tied for 42nd place.
Mitchell will compete at a triangular on Thursday against Sioux Falls Washington and Brookings at Elmwood Golf Course in Sioux Falls.
