MITCHELL — Trailing 2-1 for majority of the game, the Larchwood (Iowa) Diamonds managed to score two runs in the final three innings of play to beat the Volga Cormorants 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Cadwell Park and advance to the round of 16 in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament.

Volga took a 2-1 lead after the third inning, but both teams went scoreless over the next four innings. Looking to create some offense, Larchwood finally gained some momentum with a double by Micah Linn in the bottom of the eighth inning. Linn advanced to third after an error by Volga’s infield and Mitch Peschon hit a single up the middle to help Larchwood tie the game at two. With two runners on, Volga managed to get three straight outs to end the inning.

After a scoreless ninth inning that featured three ground outs, two strikeouts and zero hits, it would take extra innings to determine the winner. It was three batters up and three batters down for Volga at the top of the 10th, but Larchwood was able to capitalize on its first opportunity.

Linn doubled to right field on his second pitch at the plate and Cody Groskruetz hit a double to center field to seal the win. That was Groskruetz lone hit of the game and it couldn’t have come at a more crucial time.

Linn led Larchwood with three hits and two runs scored, while Eric McLauflin went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored. Mitch Peschon and Keaton Grevengoed had one hit each as well in the win. Isaac Horigan pitched 5⅔ innings and struck out a game-high nine batters, while surrendering three hits and two runs. Mitch Van Beek pitched 4⅓ innings, struck out three and gave up two hits.

For Volga, Parker Puetz struck out six and gave up three hits in five innings pitched. Nicolai Arbach struck out three and surrendered two earned runs on five hits in four innings at the mound. Zach Puetz had two hits for the Cormorants, while Noah Puetz, Josh Nelson and Damien Danziesen had one hit each.

Larchwood (Iowa) advances to the second round of the state amateuer baseball tournament and will play Dell Rapids on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "Mitchell Republic." Often, the "Mitchell Republic" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
