Kooima, Red Raiders torch DWU men

ORANGE CITY, Iowa--The Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team couldn't slow down Colton Kooima and the Northwestern College Red Raiders on Wednesday.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa-The Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team couldn't slow down Colton Kooima and the Northwestern College Red Raiders on Wednesday.

Kooima-the Great Plains Athletic Conference's leading scorer-netted 38 points as DWU lost to Northwestern College 95-86 in Orange City, Iowa. DWU falls to 15-6 overall and 5-4 in the GPAC.

The Tigers, who had their five-game winning streak snapped, were led by Jason Spicer's 31 points. Spicer finished 11-for-13 from the field and 8-for-11 at the foul line, while dishing out seven assists. Nygel Drury scored 24 points, while Collin Kramer added 19 points and nine rebounds.

Nathan Wedel added 20 points for Northwestern College, which led 45-40 at halftime. The Red Raiders maintained their lead throughout the second half as the Tigers had no answer Kooima down the stretch. He finished 13-for-25 from the field, 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 8-for-8 at the free-throw line.

The Tigers got within 69-64 with 9-minutes and 13 seconds left, but Kooima answered with a 3-pointer to extend it to 72-64 with under 9 minutes left.

The Red Raiders later stretched the margin to double figures and closed it out from there.

Trae Vandeberg added 10 points for the Tigers and DWU dynamic scorer Ty Hoglund suffered a tough shooting night. He finished 0-for-7 from the floor and 0-for-3 from long range.

The Tigers host Midland at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Corn Palace.
