Poor shooting and turnovers proved to be too much as the Mitchell Kernel girls basketball team fell to Sioux Falls O'Gorman 44-24 in the last home of the year for Mitchell.

The Kernels made only seven shots in the game on 27 attempts and they turned the ball over 29 times at the Corn Palace Saturday in the non-conference contest.

Mitchell made the long trip to Rapid City Friday to take on Rapid City Central and got home at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, leaving less than 18 hours until they had to play again.

But Kernel coach Wes Morgan said that it didn't have much of an effect.

"It might have had a little bit of an effect but you still have to play the game," Morgan said. "I thought we played with good energy and we had that energy right to the end."

It was a slow start for both teams, but the Knights managed to take a 12-4 lead after the first quarter. The cold shooting and turnovers continued for Mitchell, while O'Gorman raced to a 23-5 lead with 1:28 left until intermission.

The Kernels responded with two 3-point baskets from sophomore Jordyn Cranny and the Kernels went into halftime trailing 23-11.

Mitchell's Tess Limberg hit a layup to open the third period to cut the O'Gorman lead to pull Mitchell to within 10 at 23-13. But that's as close as the Kernels would get.

O'Gorman's Ashlee Beacom hit a 3-point basket and Sebastian Akoi hit two free throws to give the Knights a 28-13 lead and Mitchell couldn't recover.

"The ball hasn't been going in the hole and we're missing layups again," Morgan added. "Those are the things we could fix in an instant if they could get some confidence."

Cranny led Mitchell with six points and Mackenzie Miller pulled down seven rebounds.

The Kernels were 8-of-14 for 57 percent from the free throw line.

"It was a slower methodical type of game and I thought Mitchell did a good job of controlling the tempo," said O'Gorman coach Kent Kolsrud. "Our defense was really good, which has to be our bread and butter."

Beacom led the Knights with 22 points, who drained six 3-pointers. O'Gorman made 8-of-17 3-pointers overall.

O'Gorman (9-10) was 15-of-43 for 35 percent from the field and 6-of-16 for 38 percent from the free throw line. The Knights outrebounded the Kernels 25-20 and turned the ball over 13 times.

Mitchell falls to 3-16 and will end the regular season Tuesday with a trip to Yankton.

O'Gorman swept the subvarsity games, with the JV topping Mitchell 53-23 and the sophmores taking down the Kernels 42-26. O'Gorman also won the freshman game 37-25.
