The Mitchell High school wrestling team is heading in the right direction at the right time.

Mitchell picked up its first Eastern South Dakota Conference dual win of the season in a triangular on Tuesday in Mitchell. The Kernels defeated Yankton 55-24 after falling to Harrisburg 35-31 in the first dual of the triangular.

"Against Yankton, we went out and wrestled really well," Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. "Our kids did a great job. We are going in the right direction, but we have to start wrestling for each other a little bit more which will bring us to that next level."

Against the Tigers, Mitchell picked up wins by Kyler Bauder at 106 pounds, Ryan McGinnis (113), Briggs Havlik (145), Carson Max (170), Alex Klingaman (195) and Zeb Parsons (285). Havlik, Klingaman and Parsons each earned pins over the Tigers.

"We had our chances against Harrisburg," Carpenter said. "We had a couple of opportunities that we missed, but still, the kids wrestled hard and did a good job."

In the second dual, Harrisburg beat Yankton 51-25 and Mitchell picked up its first ESD dual win 55-24 over Yankton in the final dual.

"We came together as a team during the second dual and were helping each other out," Havlik said. "We were all in every match together and we wanted to get a W as a team. I'm pretty proud of all of our guys."

Logan Sparks (120), Sutton Carpenter (138), Zach Smith (152), Kyle Foote (160) each picked up wins along with Bauder, McGinnis, Havlik, Max and Klingaman.

Klingaman picked up the quickest pin for the Kernels by dispatching Yankton's Trevor Ellis in 16 seconds, while Bauder, McGinnis, Havlik, Smith, Foote and Max picked up pins against Yankton.

Carpenter said Tuesday's performances showed how far the Kernels have come since the beginning of the wrestling season as Mitchell lost to Yankton in a dual 44-24 on Dec. 5 in Watertown.

"Both of these teams beat us handly at the beginning of the year, so we've improved quite a bit," Carpenter said. "It's just about taking that next step and winning some matches that maybe you're not supposed to win."

The Kernels continue a busy week of action with a triangular against Brandon Valley and Watertown in Thursday in Watertown, before competing in their final tournament of the season on Saturday in Huron.

"Hopefully, we can stay healthy and, in all reality, we'd like to get a win or two on Thursday night," Carpenter said. "We need to improving in the (wrestling) room and get in a little bit better shape to be ready for regions."
