SIOUX FALLS-With the exception of rainy weather, Mitchell girls tennis coach Pat Moller was pleased with the opening day of the South Dakota state girls tennis tournament.

The stormy weather in Sioux Falls caused havoc and forced venue changes throughout Thursday. The Kernels remained steady and are currently in third place with 307 points. Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls O'Gorman are tied for first place with 324 points.

"It was a really chaotic day," Moller said. "We started outdoors. We went indoors, then we moved back outdoors again and it was a crazy day."

Mitchell won all but one of its singles matches and its Flight No. 1 doubles team of Sammy Pooley and Avery Larson are playing in the championship semifinals today. Pooley and Larson will play Sioux Falls Lincoln's Meredith Benson and Ava Leonard in the championship semifinals today.

Pooley (Flight No. 1 singles), Larson (Flight No. 2 singles), Kelsey Dahme (No. 3 singles), Sarah Zimmerman (No. 5 singles) and Kiersten Bathke (No. 6 singles) will all play in today's quarterfinals.

"We played well," Moller said. "We are playing at or above seed everywhere and that's really all you can ask for."

The tournament continues today in Sioux Falls.

"We have got some matches to win (today), obviously," Moller said. "But it was as good as we could have expected for (Thursday)."
