BROOKINGS - Briggs Havlik and Carson Max each placed first as the Mitchell High School wrestling team took third place at the Les Tlustos-Brookings Invite on Saturday in Brookings.
Mitchell recorded 162 team points at the tournament and had nine wrestlers place. Pierre won the 15-team tournament with 239.5 points.
"It was a good bounce back from (Friday's dual loss to Huron). We had kids step up and win close matches," MHS head coach Travis Carpenter said. "It's all about believing in yourself."
Havlik topped Pierre's Austin Senger 3-1 in the 160-pound championship match and Max bested Pierre's Gage Gehring 3-1 in the 195 title match.
At 126 pounds, Ryan McGinnis finished second, while Carter Max (182) took third and Kyler Bauder (120) and Sutton Carpenter (145) each finished fourth. Tyson Degen (138) placed eighth, Max Schoenfelder (170) finished in sixth and Wyatt Winer (285) took fifth.

"I was real happy with Ryan McGinnis with getting to the finals," Carpenter said. "Tyson Degen snuck in and got a place. We played with the lineup some and Wyatt got fifth at heavyweight. I was happy with the effort from all of our guys."
Mitchell competes in a triangular on Tuesday in Yankton.
