BRANDON -- The Mitchell High School boys' tennis team took fifth place over the weekend at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet in Brandon.
Watertown took the ESD championship with 339 total team points. Pierre was second with 260 points, while Brandon Valley (183) and Huron (173) were the other teams to finish with more than the Kernels' 139 team points.
Alex Hegg, the Kernels' No. 6 singles player, had the best individual tournament for the team. Hegg took second place in his singles division.
Beau Brown and Tate Crago each took third place in their individual brackets. Brown competes at No. 2 singles and Crago placed at No. 5.
Mitchell got fourth-place finishers at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with Jacob Cersosimo and Taylor Moore respectively.

Kanin Nelson took sixth at No. 4 singles.
In doubles the Kernels took third, sixth and fifth.
Cersosimo and Moore teamed up to finish third for the No. 1 doubles team and Nelson and Hegg finished sixth at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Brown and Brenden Lehr finished in fifth place.
The Kernels next competition is at the state tournament which starts Thursday in Rapid City.
