BROOKINGS - Both the boys and girls Mitchell High School track and field teams placed eighth at the Eastern South Dakota Conference indoor meet on Thursday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings.

The Kernel boys finished with 494.5 team points, while the MHS girls recorded 458 team points. Brandon Valley won the boys competition with 994 points and Yankton won the girls event with 837.5 points.

"The kids know there is work to do and we know we have to get better," MHS head coach Joe Shepardson said. "We are still getting in shape. They know now after getting a little taste they can keep getting better. I'm excited to see how we respond in practice next week."

Individually, Carly Haring was the Kernels' lone winner, taking first in the girls high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches. Haring added a sixth-place finish in the triple jump (31-11.25), while Kyla Crago took third in both the 200- and 300-meter dashes with times of 27.48 and 42.94 seconds, respectively.

"Carly had a tremendous day," Shepardson said. "She almost had 5-8 (cleared). We thought she was over it but it just trickled off."

Caitlin Ostbye placed seventh in the 100 (13.45), while Tayler Factor took ninth in the 1,600 (6:23.78), TyAnn Hart finished 10th (6:27.34) and Kaylee Nygaard placed 10th in the long jump (14-10.75).

On the boys side, Miles Rolle took second in the triple jump with a leap of 39-07.25.

"Miles competed well," Shepardson said. "He had a jump that would've won it but scratched by a centimeter."

Courtney Miller had a strong showing in the sprints, taking third in the 300 (37.97) and fourth in the 200 (23.52). Jarod Uher finished sixth in the 800 (2:11.14) and seventh in the 300 (39.36), while Tate Larson placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (45.75) and 10th in the 60 hurdles (9.98).

Sam Jones earned a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (13-00.0), Isaac Kitchens finished eighth in the 300 hurdles (46.12), Cole Sievert placed 10th in the high jump (5-06). Kiel Nelson took seventh in the pole vault (12-00.0) and Sutton Carpenter finished nine (12-00.0).

"I'm real happy with Tate Larson. He's been competing in hurdles for one year and showed a lot of growth," Shepardson said. "Sam Jones had a big a personal record. He can be competitive with the rest of the state in pole vault."

Shepardson added praise for the effort he saw out of D.J. Krogman and Corbin Cheeseman, who competed in events for the first time.

Mitchell is scheduled to compete in its first outdoor meet on April 6 in Huron.
