Mitchell's Cameryn Logan (10) reaches up for a kill against Pierre on Thursday at MHS gym.

The Mitchell High School volleyball team was swept by Pierre 25-15, 25-17 and 25-21 in a high school volleyball match on Thursday at MHS gym.

Facing a solid Pierre (3-0) squad, Mitchell (1-1) only compounded matters with unforced errors. The Governors finished with 18 hitting errors in the sweep.

Mitchell coach Deb Thill pointed to it still being early in the season for the woes and they will be eliminated with more court time.

“Yeah we had a lot of hitting errors, but we are going to get better at that,” Thill said. “We are going to get better. I thought we served well. I loved, loved, loved our effort on the floor and the way they talked to each other and their attitudes. So that part of the game is going to help with the physical part of the game and getting better.”

Mitchell fell behind early in both of the first two sets, as Pierre rattled off long scoring runs in each set. The Kernels again fell behind in the third set, but rallied to get within two (23-21) late in the set. But the Governors earned a point after a long rally and push it to 24-21 and closed it out from there.

“We cleaned things up,” Thill said about the third set. “We were playing a little bit better and we need to play (like) that team in order for us to get better.”

The Kernels also gave Pierre three points due to rotation violations. Thill said the Kernels tinkered with their lineup on Wednesday and that led to the violations.

“Some of that is just the newness of it,” Thill said. “But they have to know where they are at on the floor, too. So those are unforced errors that aren’t going to happen again.”

Sarah Sebert led the Kernels with six kills and 12 digs. Cameryn Logan added three kills. Katy Sebert finished with nine assists and Paige Guthmiller added eight digs.

The Kernels host Brandon Valley at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

“We still have to work on passing and keeping Katy in system so we have a choice of hitters,” Thill added. “Sometimes when Katy is scrambling then she can basically only go to one person. We are just going to keep working on that.”
