Kernels place ninth at Jerry Opbroek

The Mitchell High School wrestling team placed ninth at the Jerry Opbroek Invitational on Saturday in Mitchell.

Pierre-the defending Class A state champions-won the 10-team event with 210 points, while the Kernels finished with 32 points. Parkston placed fourth with 103 points, Bon Homme/Scotland took sixth with 68 points, Winner finished seventh with 60 points and Wagner ended up eighth with 34 points.

Briggs Havlik, wrestling at 145 pounds, was the highest placer for the Kernels as he won the consolation championship and took third place. Havlik earned two wins over Pierre's Dommonick Pechous.

"He got stronger as the day went and improved as he wrestled each match," Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. "It was great to see him take third place at a tournament like this."

Cole Gerhrke (126) placed fourth after losing a 3-0 decision to Rapid City Stevens' Cooper Voorhees in the consolation championship. Kyler Bauder (106), Zach Smith (152) each earned two wins, while Carter Max (182) picked up one win at the event. The Kernels had 15 wrestlers compete in the tournament.

"Cole did a good job to battle back and place, but as a whole I thought we wrestled better," Carpenter said. "We knew it was going to be tough but our kids battled and they did some good things. I was pleased with how it went."

Mitchell competes in a dual against Huron on Thursday in Mitchell.

Area wrestlers place at Opbroek

The Trojans had five wrestlers reach the championship match with Lucas Bietz (160) and Austin Ripp (170) each placing first. Logan Mahoney (120), Kyler Holzbauer (138) and Dawson Semmler (145) each placed second.

For Bon Homme/Scotland, Alex Caba won the 138-pound title, while Kaleb Crownover (113) placed second and Tanner Iwan (182) and Kreg Kepplinger (220) each placed third.

Colby Curtis (126) placed second for Winner, while Kayleb Brozik (170) earned a third-place finish.

Wagner's Truman Ashes won the heavyweight division.
