It was another five-set match for the Mitchell High School volleyball team.
But unlike Tuesday's match against Huron, the Kernels closed it out on Thursday.
The No. 4 Mitchell High School volleyball team edged No. 5 Sioux Falls Roosevelt in a five-set non-conference match at MHS Gym. Set scores were 25-21, 25-12, 23-25, 22-25 and 15-10.
"We passed the ball better," Mitchell head coach Deb Thill said. "We serve-received better. We played really well in set one and two."
The Kernels (9-2) cut down on their miscues and that helped spur a 2-0 lead in the match.
"We had even more energy than we did on Tuesday and we really had the fight in us (Thursday)," Mitchell senior middle hitter Carly Haring said.
Haring had a monster game with 20 kills and three solo blocks.
"She played great," Thill said. "They really didn't have an answer for her."
But for Haring, it all started with the passing and setting from senior setter Mandy Schmidt.
"It makes my job so much easier when the pass is perfect because Mandy is able to set it even better and then I can get a kill," Haring said.
Senior hitter Chelsea Brewster finished with 11 kills and 21 digs. Schmidt added 17 digs and defensive specialist Bridget Thill finished with 16 digs.
"I feel like it was a lot better," Bridget Thill said about the passing. "Our serve-receive was pretty on point. Mandy didn't have to run all over."
Mitchell still let its 2-0 lead slip away against the Rough Riders (8-6). The Kernels fell in a pair of close second and third sets.
"We had communication errors," coach Thill said. "We had balls hit the floor and we are too good of a team to let that happen."
Mitchell recaptured the momentum in the fifth set. Roosevelt scored the first two points, but the Kernels rattled off the next 10 points for a 10-2 advantage. The Rough Riders responded with a last-gasp rally, but Mitchell hung on for the victory.
"Our kids stepped up and Roosevelt has a great team, too," coach Thill said. "They played hard. They played well. They did a great job coming back after those first two sets. So you have to give them credit."
Mackenzie Miller finished with 11 kills and eight digs, reaching the 1,000th career dig mark. She's also closing in on 1,000 career kills.
Mitchell plays at Pierre on Saturday in an Eastern South Dakota Conference match. It will be Mitchell's second true road match of the season.
"We are really excited to go the road and see other teams at their place and hopefully get some more wins," Haring said.
