SIOUX FALLS -- If the Mitchell High School gymnastics team wasn't confident before the Lolly Forseth Invite, it certainly was after.
The Kernels dominated the field on Friday night and won the 10-team invite by nearly 11 points. Defending state champion Mitchell recorded a team score of 146.445. Rapid City Central took second with a 135.575 and was followed by Sioux Falls Roosevelt (134.75), Sioux Falls O'Gorman (133.4) and Brookings (132.2).
"They acted like the experienced team they are," Mitchell coach Audra Rew said after the meet. "I couldn't ask for anything more from them today."
The Kernels counted just one fall in the meet, a big step forward from their season opener on Monday.
"There were no signs of nerves," Rew said. "We had a stellar meet."

Mitchell also earned the top two individual finishes. Senior Rebecca Sadler won the all-around with a 37.225, and junior Quinci Herll was second with a 36.875. Rapid City Central's Chelsey Christensen, who was runner-up at the last year's state meet, took third with a 36.525. Mitchell's final all-around competitor, eighth-grader Maria Krall, finished in seventh with a 35.025.
Rew said Sadler has been working hard on her vault in practice and it paid off.
"We've been talking about hitting one event at a time, and she did that," Rew said. "Hitting her vault to finish the meet was key for her. Everything went her way today."
Herll won the floor exercise with a 9.425, and Mitchell had several other top 10 finishes in its second meet of the season.
The Kernels are back in action in a triangular at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Yankton.
