After a pair of Eastern South Dakota Conference wins to start the season, Mitchell High School hosted Rapids City Central and Vermillion in a girls tennis triangular on Tuesday at Hitchcock Park.

The Kernels have lost only two matches all season and the stellar start continued, dropping just one match in two dual meets, besting RC Central 9-0 and Vermillion 8-1 to remain unbeaten.

Not only did Mitchell lose just one match, but it only dropped three sets all day.

"It was a good day for us," Mitchell head coach Pat Moller said. "Beautiful weather for the middle of August and the girls performed well against two opponents we should play well against."

The Kernels swept RC Central in the first dual meet, winning all nine matches in straight sets, before dropping just one match in the second dual to Vermillion.

Avery Larson went unblemished in both matches at No. 1 singles, beating Central's McKenzey Crowley, 6-1, 6-2, and Vermillion's Jane Ni Struckman-Johnson, 6-0, 6-0.

"Every team has one good tennis player and sometimes we take (Larson) for granted because she goes out against the best player every time," Moller said. "For her to be that rock at the top is a luxury not every team has. I'm just happy with the leader she has become on the court and off."

Larson also won both of her doubles matches with partner Kelsey Dahme, who also won both her No. 2 singles matches in straight sets. Kiersten Bathke won twice at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles, while Atlanta Stahle and Olivia Huber won a pair of singles matches apiece in straight sets. Amber Moller teamed with Stahle and No. 3 doubles for two wins. Madison Bohlen lost at No. 3 singles to Vermillion's Emma Dahlhoff, but won her previous singles match and both doubles contests on the day.

The Kernels play in the Rapid City Invitational Thursday through Saturday.
