HURON -- Despite high winds and only a week of practice, the Mitchell High School girls tennis team came out firing to start the season. It swept the Huron triangular, defeating Aberdeen Roncalli, 5-4, then taking down the host, 9-0.

“With only a week of practice before the match, our doubles team hasn’t really had a chance to play together yet,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said. “So to play one of the better teams (Aberdeen Roncalli) and come away with a win, despite not being as prepared as we’d like to be, I would say that’s a pretty big positive for our team.”

The Kernels needed time to adjust to the wind as it dropped numerous first sets against the Cavaliers, who return their entire lineup from a year ago.

By the end, Kelsey Dahme (Flight No. 1), Olivia Huber (Flight No. 3) and Ashley Jones (Flight No. 6) all notched wins in singles play. Dahme/Atlanta Stahle (Flight No. 1) and Kiersten Bathke/Jones (Flight No. 3) both notched wins in doubles play, too.

“If we played Huron first and then played Roncalli, we could have started out a little faster,” Moller said. “The wind really took us off guard and took us a little bit of time to get used to.”

Mitchell didn’t start slow against Huron, though, with all but one player winning 6-1 in the opening set. It didn’t drop a set the entire match as Dahme defeated Kayla Harvey 6-1, 6-1, then teamed up with Stahle to take down Harvey/Audrey Rubish, 6-2, 6-1.

“Kelsey’s going to be a rock for us at the top,” Moller said. “She gets it done on the court, but she’s also such a good leader to those girls with the advice and observations she does.”

Olivia Huber (Flight No. 3) and Jones each won 6-1, 6-1, while Mitchell never dropped more than two games in a set against Huron in doubles play.

The Kernels host Brookings at 11 a.m. Monday at Hitchcock Park.
