SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell High School golf team had a tough day with the putter on Monday.

The Kernels shot a 349 and are tied for 10th place after the first round of the Class AA state golf tournament at Willow Run Golf Course.

“Disappointing overall team performance and 90 percent of it was the flat stick,” Mitchell coach Mark Horan said. “We just did not putt very good. I saw so many three and four-foot putts.”

The Kernels were prepared for the greens, too. They had played at the course earlier in the season and took in a practice round Sunday.

But they still weren’t prepared for them on Monday.

“It’s just hard to adjust to really sloped, really fast greens that we just did not have the speed control down,” Horan said. “We would lag them by and leave them short.”

Mitchell’s Macon Larson shot a 78 and is tied for 11th place. Larson’s round was highlighted by a 37 on the back nine, which included seven pars and one birdie.

“That’s the harder nine, too,” Horan said. “So he did real good job there.”

Jackson Childs (T-45, 88), Lincoln Bates (T-55, 90), Ashton Reminitz (65, 93), Noah Larson (T-70, 95) and Carter Harris (T-88, 106) rounded out the Kernel golfers.

“It showed today we had two juniors, two sophomores and two freshman,” Horan said. “Only three of the kids had played in the state tournament before and it kind of showed. They were kind of nervous.”

Sioux Falls Lincoln is in first place with a 307. Watertown’s Kaden Rylance, Lincoln’s Nash Sternberg, O’Gorman’s William Sanford and Rapid City Central’s Alex Duran are tied in first with 73’s.

Chamberlain sits in third place at Class A

HOT SPRINGS -- The Chamberlain boys golf team is in third place after the first day of the Class A state tournament at Southern Hills Golf Course.

The Cubs shot 61 shots over par. Sioux Falls Christian (+38) and Tea Area (+55) are in first and second, respectively.
