HARRISBURG-The Mitchell girls golf team finished ninth in its season debut on Thursday at Spring Creek Golf Course in Harrisburg.

The Kernels shot a 380, which is already an improvement from last season when the young squad routinely shot in the 400's.

"I am very happy with the outcome of the first tournament as far as how the girls played and how they can recognize their own mistakes," Mitchell coach Keri Munsen said.

Aberdeen Central shot a 326 to win the team title. Natalie Young, of Rapid City Stevens, claimed individual medalist honors with a 74.

Eighth-grader Masy Mock was Mitchell's top finisher. She shot an 89 (45-44) and tied for 22nd.

"I know one of her goals is to always break 90," Munsen said. "Seeing her doing that in the first tournament and stepping up to that No. 1 position that I put her in today, really says a lot about her."

Kailee Henglefelt tied for 28th with a 93 (44-49).

The Kernels will compete in a quad against Sioux Falls Washington, Harrisburg and Yankton on April 20 at Willow Run Golf Course in Sioux Falls. Munsen said the top priority in practice this week will be shaving strokes on the putting greens.

"I know the girls have a tough time reading the greens and the speed of the greens," Munsen said. "Working on that is going to be one of our top things these next few days."
